The three-bag capsule wardrobe
Three well-chosen bags can cover work, weekends and evenings. A practical way to build the set.

A capsule wardrobe is about owning less and wearing more. The same idea works for handbags: three well-chosen bags can cover almost everything.
1. The daily workhorse
This is the bag that does the heavy lifting. Choose a structured satchel or tote in a neutral colour such as black, cognac or deep brown. It should fit a laptop or a notebook, a wallet and a water bottle, and look right at an office, at lunch and on a school run. Prioritise a strong base, comfortable handles and a leather that forgives scratches.
2. The hands-free companion
The second bag is for days when you walk, travel or move quickly. A crossbody, belt bag or compact bucket is ideal. Pick a slightly different colour from the first, perhaps sand or taupe, so the two never feel redundant. Look for an adjustable strap that works across the body and over the shoulder.
3. The evening piece
A small clutch or mini bag in a finish with a little light: champagne metallic, burgundy or ivory. It only needs to hold a phone, a card and a lipstick, but it should make a simple outfit look finished.
How the three work together
- Colours: one deep neutral, one lighter neutral, one accent finish.
- Sizes: large, medium, small. Never two bags that do the same job.
- Hardware: keep the metal consistent, for example brushed gold throughout.
Building it slowly
You do not have to buy all three at once. Start with the daily workhorse, wear it for a season and notice what you wish you had. That answer usually points to the second bag.
Three bags, each carried often and looked after, will outlast a closet of impulse buys.
